Tory Burch: A House of Style

Any plans to visit New York City in the near future? If so, make sure you spend some time at 797 Madison Avenue, the new Tory Burch store on the Upper East Side.

Having visited the Tory Burch store on Bond Street in London, I could not wait to check out her newest location on this side of the pond. On Saturday, I took a quick cab ride from Bergdorf Goodman's to Tory's latest house of style.

I wanted to buy clothes (maybe some shoes and a bag, too), but mostly I wanted to study the decor. In classic Tory fashion, 797 glimmered and glowed as it flowed seamlessly up three flights of stairs. For a moment, I had to remind myself that I was in a home, not a store. I mean that I was in a store, not a home.

Love, love, love the wallpaper!

Love the use of glass, mirror, light and some green!

I had to resist sitting in one of those chairs and putting my feet up.

There's that wallpaper again. And look at this sconce!

What a beautiful light fixture!

Love the lucite tray!

The salesperson was exceptionally patient as she explained to me that the lamps, tables and chairs were not for sale and that Tory Burch does not have her own wallpaper line.

Green is everywhere! Over the past few weeks, I've been seeing it more and more. At Market in New York, green was a major player and on a recent trip to Brazil, one of the CGH team discovered that green rules the South American coast.

We love green and have become obsessed with it . . . green jewelry, green architecture, and now shagreen furniture.

Shagreen (pronounced shuh-green) is a form of leather consisting of rough untanned skin and dyed various colors. (One of the colors is actually green, too!) Shagreen has a rough surface and is sometimes used as fancy leather for book bindings, pocketbooks and small cases.

The October issue of Elle Decor magazine dedicates its "Truth in Decorating" article to shagreen (pages 158-160). Professional designers Georgia Tapert Howe and Trip Haenisch share their own opinions and uses of this exotic leather.

Vintage Turkish Patchwork Rugs: Beautiful and Green Friendly!

Vintage Patchwork Rug in Autumn tones

Clayton Gray Home customers now have access to one-of-a-kind vintage patchwork rugs. These unique rugs are hand-stitched together in Turkey using salvaged pieces of vintage asian rugs. Individual parts of damaged or worn, but still beautiful original antique rugs from throughout the world (some over 100 years old), from Pakistan, India, Nepal, Jaipur, Tibet, Armenia and Turkey are saved, collected and stitched together. The rug then goes through an over-dye process to give it varying shades of a certain color tone. These original vintage Turkish pieces are very special handmade rugs that will add color and history to any room. Of course, since each patchwork is unique, color and pattern variations will differ slightly, making them special in their own way.

The ultimate green product for your home, vintage patchwork rugs are a genuine recycled product! The varying patterns and designs that were weaved into the original antique rugs years ago, are still visible and often parts of the patterns are in very good shape. After pieces are selected and then thoughtfully placed to form a pleasing mosaic effect, the finished product is a custom piece of history.

A large "baseball" stitch is used to hand-sew the pieces together.

Production of the rugs includes being stitched to a solid backing to give the piece years of stability in your home under typical use. The rugs have been over dyed in varying tones and are available in different colors to work with your interior.

We just love 2010 HGTV Design Star winner Emily Henderson's blog, so it was a real treat to spot our Suzani Tribal Throw Pillow in Orange on the mood board in episode 13 of her new TV show, Secrets from a Stylist. Lanterns with Sketch42

NYC Artist and Writer Nicole Cohen of sketch42 was nice enough
to feature two of our lights in her blog. The Stephano Chandelier
and the Grande Cuba de Marco Lantern were 2 of Nicole's finds
while she was searching for options for an interior design client.

These are two of the many new lights that we are carrying.

Nicole chose two very nice options. Her client really can't go wrong

with either the rustic and simple, but elegant Stephano in a

natural rust finish, or the formidable Cubo de Marco Chandelier

which is finished in Newport Silver and comes in at almost 3 feet tall!

Nicole and her ridiculously awesome apartment in Manhattan

were also recently featured in an 18 page spread ( see page 100 )

in the great on-line magazine Rue.

2011 Showcase House: 1928 Mansion in Pacific Heights

The showcase is the West Coast’s premiere design show house event, featuring the work of the region’s top designers. Lighting, furniture, paint colors, floor

treatments and accessories are all chosen and installed for this charity event.

The annual event benefits the San Francisco University High School.

The Showcase just opened on Saturday, April 30 and will continue

through May 30.

We are so excited to have just stocked some gorgeous handmade rugs from Turkey. Styled after the classic Beni Ourain rug from the Middle Atlas mountains in Morocco, these 100% wool rugs are very unusual and very special.

The weave creates a very soft rug. You may never want to put your shoes on again!

Ancient Beni Ouarain breed of sheep grazing.The Beni Ouarain tribes did not use their original carpets as floor covers, but rather as beds and bedding.

Here, Jonathan Adler uses a Beni at the Parker Palm Springs.

Right now, we have 2 different Beni-style rugs in-stock. Both are handmade in Turkey, and are 100% wool. The hexagon shaped pattern (pictured above),

and the diamond shape patterned rugs.

Allegra Hicks has An Eye for Design!

We are just loving Allegra Hicks' book, An Eye for Design! Using the seasons Autumn, Winter, Spring and Summer as a framework, she and photographer Emanuele Mascioni, and creative director Antonio Monfreda present her original textile and pattern designs alongside beautiful photos of interiors, landscapes, and unusual points of nature. The coffee table book is filled with big, colorful images of fabrics, interiors, rocks, and plants. There are far more photographs than writings, but speckled throughout the 224 page book, Allegra Hicks very carefully and poetically explains (and shows) her design philosophies and inspirations. Great book - we love it!

Sunburst Mirror hits Wall Street!

Very interesting article in last week's Wall Street Journal regarding the history of the starburst mirror. Some suggest that the style was first popularized by King Louis XIV of France.

Others say that the mirrors are the result of antique dealers and collectors repurposing the many religious icons that flooded the market after the 1789-1799 French Revolution. The merchants and decorators purged the round portraits and images of the Holy Family and saints from their metal frames and replaced them with mirror. Now, over 200 years later, these mirrors can still add an unexpected pop to almost any room. Among our collection of mirrors, we've offered several varieties of sunburst or starburst mirrors and at times, we've even had trouble keeping them in stock!

The Barbara Cosgrove Story

This week, Clayton Gray Home introduced a handful of new items from Barbara Cosgrove Lamps. But the story behind the artist and designer Barbara Cosgrove is as compelling as her pieces.

At age 47, Barbara found herself in a mid-career crisis. A sculptor by trade, when Barbara wasn’t working alone in an artist’s studio, she was at home raising a family. With her children grown though, the thrill was gone of heading into the studio and working alone all day. “I’ve been an artist all my life and I don’t think people realize that being an artist is really lonely. You go into the studio, work by yourself and go home in the evening. I had my family, but being a studio artist I didn’t have a lot of people around me at work. In addition, she felt that at almost 50, she was more marketable than an employer would perceive her to be.

A trip to the Atlanta International Gift and Home Furnishings Market changed everything. Barbara saw first-hand where the artist and designer connects with the buyer and her creative energy started flowing. With her background in ceramics, Barbara designed and built a small collection of clay lamps, among a few other pieces. Well, none of the clay lamps sold, but the other pieces did! You say, ‘Well, that didn’t work. I have to have another idea.’ Or, ‘That did work. Let’s build on that.’ You back up and you move forward. You back up and you move forward. You just keep trying.” Working out of her garage (do all success stories start in a garage?) Barbara began with 3 to 5 local accounts. Today, her company has about 5000 accounts.

“I was 47 when I started my business. Though I hadn’t started a business before, I had sat at the dinner table with other people who had. had all these great professionals that came with my age, not my experience… the experience of all the people around me – friends, neighbors, dinner partners. You learn a lot of stuff just by listening.

One More Top Pick - Jarrod Pendant light

Adding to that Top List of Picks from Arteriors Home is the Jarrod Pendant Light shown above. We just couldn't leave it out, since it's one of the most unique fixtures we've seen from them in a while. The varied coloring of the carved wood exterior caught our eye right away.

Upon further inspection, we were captivated by the round circles in the drum shade which allows the most beautiful display of light to shine through. Taking every detail into account, the inside top of the light fixture is mirrored, adding that bit of surprise for those catching the extra feature.

The High Point Market photo above gives a better view of the Jarrod, which is quite large at 30" in diameter, making a statement for any room. Meet the man behind the colorful rugs. Kaffe Fassett (shown above), the master quilter, has touched the rug market with his unique sense of color and pattern to create a line of floor covering that could easily grace your walls.

Born in San Francisco in 1937, he began his creative career with a scholarship to the Museum of Fine Arts School in Boston.

Isn't it nice to be mentioned? It just really makes our day around here! So, after taking a few minutes to poke around the Thirteen and South blog, we were immediately grinning from ear to ear. Naomi has taken on a fun renovation project -- her own home! Even though the project is in the "not so fun stage" of electrical and AC ducts, readers can see a play-by-play of the entire project as directed from a design professional.

Certainly not a novice in this area, Naomi and her dad, Andrew (shown above) run the construction business Design Manifest in Philadelphia, PA.

The family-run business has 35 years of experience under their belts, so we're pretty sure they can handle this project. In the meantime, we'll stay updated with her blog to see how things are coming along. Don't worry Naomi - we still think you are cool!

Recent photos from the New York International Gift Fair show the latest designs from Bungalow 5. We are loving the mirrored Catherine Desk or Vanity featured above. This piece is so versatile with its storage and the unbelievable reflection it provides to your room.

The Parsons line from Bungalow 5 is a newer line showcased originally in the summer collection. We are finally able to see some of the different styles in the various colors offered. The above Parsons Coffee Table shows texture with its lacquered grasscloth finish in Navy Blue. Such a nice change to work with navy blue when you want something a little different.

The article quotes New York City designer Elaine Griffin saying "Honey is great for the color-phobic. Think of it as beige after it has had a cocktail or after spending a day on the beach."

Batik Table Lamp by Arteriors Home - the blue and white pattern to this table lamp is what makes it so unique. In person, you see a quality light fixture with a carefully thought out pattern.

As you all know, anything from Bungalow 5 appeals to Clayton Gray Home. We were thrilled to see the Christina Lamp in Turquoise make the House Beautiful list. Home Stylist - Wooden Conservatory Pendants

Molly from New York recently purchased the large Wooden Conservatory Pendant from Clayton Gray Home and wrote in to our "Home Stylist" asking for suggestions on other items to pair with her new light.

Great question and we are delighted to offer suggestions, since the Wooden Conservatory Pendants have been one of our best sellers. It's easy to see the appeal of this light (available in 2 sizes) with it's simple wood frame, clear glass sides and white wash finish.

A great accent to the light would be the Architectural Oval Mirror. Made of distressed wood, the natural coloring makes it look great on any wall color. Having the two items nearby would start the cool vibe of wooden products that have been modernized.

Easily our "go-to" floor covering, we love the Zebra Rug with the Wooden Conservatory Pendant. The black and white design would give the light an edge. Keeping the look neutral, but not boring, the simplicity of colors makes bringing other pieces of furniture into the mix an easy task.

Media cabinets have sure come a long way, haven't they? Such is the thought in the article/feature in House Beautiful magazine October issue.

We were thrilled to see the Matisse Large Cabinet from Bungalow 5 featured in their line up of "storage beauties". The selections by Orli Ben-Dor give us more choices than the typical armoire that has been used for many years to store the unattractive television.

However, now that flat screens have come on the scene, it's a little more acceptable, and quite frankly "chic", to show off your modern electronic piece.

As some have found, there can be issues with those solid doors and getting your prized remote to access all of the important equipment being hidden by the cabinet. How smart and stylish though is the Matisse from Bungalow 5. The cut-out leaf design (shown above) manages to solve all issues that have previously plagued this essential home piece.

To be sure we stay on top of the trends out there, Clayton Gray Home attended the 2009 Fall Line Presentation earlier this week at Interiors Trading in Tampa. For those who missed the tabletop show of new fabrics and wallpapers, we have our favorite picks from companies like Stroheim, Schumacher, Thibaut, Highland Court, Fabric, Clark and Clark and Phillip Jeffries.

Stroheim (above and below) featured the large floral prints with a modern edge. The colors used are fresh and inspiring.

Highland Court (above) showed an "Orla Kiely" looking print (back left) with autumn colors. I feel sure I have the actual Orla Kiely bag to coordinate with this fabric. The look is stylish and whimsical and would make excellent pillows.

More from Highland Court (above) - isn't the gray graphic design very "David Hicks". Gray continues to be seen in every line and that makes us so happy!

Schumacher (above) - how about this oversized print in gray and cream? Traditional in design, but the color scheme makes it current. Loving this!

We were drawn to these wallpaper designs (above) from Thibaut. The Cork paper is full of texture and is actually paper-backed blocks of cork printed with metallic inks. We are thinking of placing in a residential bar with brick and iron - very clubby, don't you think?

Clark & Clark (above) is a newer line for us and we are loving the graphic nature (on table) they bring. Each is simple in design, making them easy to add to any room.

Also from Clark & Clark (above) was the fabulous "wheel" of patent leather options. You can be sure we will be incorporating a few of these in our fall products.

Fabricut (above) - also featuring a vinyl patent option and priced for affordability.

Aren't these little wallpaper samples (above) so darling? Phillip Jeffries wallpaper line ended up captivating our visit. When they say "let your walls shine", they are serious.

Picture above isn't great, but these are all beautiful linen wallpapers. Many great colors to choose from and you would be hard pressed upon observation, to tell if one is fabric or wallpaper. The weave is tight and the overall effect is flawless.

More from our favorite company (above), Phillip Jefferies introduced a "metallic back grasscloth" that was beautiful! Each textured piece featured a metallic backer that would surely transform any room. Many great neutral shades to choose from that we couldn't wait to dream up a project that would include the look. Books, books, and more books: tips on artful arranging

As a writer by trade, I treasure my books. From a signed Judy Blume book from the time I met the author in fifth grade to my collection of first editions, each book on my shelves holds a special place in my heart. I've even saved anthologies and poetry collections from college English classes.

If you're not a natural-born designer — as I'm certainly not — arranging books and other items decoratively on your shelves can be quite a challenge.

There's a great blog on displaying and organizing books as treasures at Sanity F air. I must say, the curtain idea is my favorite, especially for someone with limited living space.

Because of Julie's impeccable design taste, we decided to dig deeper to find out more about her strategies and experiences. Here's our Q&A:

Have you ever bought something for a client that you wanted to keep for yourself?

Of course, a number of times! I usually admire the one-of-a-kind furniture pieces that can’t be found at chain stores.

I recently purchased a great cocktail table from a store in N.Y., that’s on my current wish list.

What is foremost in your mind when looking for products for clients?

I always have to consider price; clients usually have a budget and appreciate the thoughtfulness. What I am looking for in each job differs greatly, but I like to be “moved” by a piece. Not everything can scream “wow” in a room, but I aim to source unique items and objects for my projects. Quality is, of course, always a priority.

What is your design philosophy?

My goal with Shelter is to create unique, cohesive, visually graphic, functional spaces that suit my clients' lifestyles and needs. I strive for each space or home to contain elements of unexpected beauty and comfort! Great design is in the details.

Which is your favorite of all the Clayton Gray Home items you chose? Why?

That’s a tough call. I love them all for one reason or another. I think the Powell Cocktail table, a nod to Warren Platner, would make a room. It’s glamorous, beautiful and the gold finish is unexpected. The Marco Cabinet in white is also amazing. It doesn’t get much better then lacquered grass cloth.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

I love the creative design process. My job and work is always evolving. Keeping things fresh is imperative to me. Seeing the finished product and a very pleased client is extremely rewarding!

What's an important lesson you've learned about design over the years?

Don’t be afraid to verify the details over and over again! Mistakes do happen but many can be avoided. If you are unsure of the something, it’s so important to double-check measurements, pricing, color, etc. Always have the fabricator of any custom piece obtain the dimensions on-site for the piece they are making! Take some pressure off yourself!

Roberta Schilling Handmade Chandeliers Bring Rich Texture to Rooms

Her interest in decor and crafts started at an early age, when Schilling helped her mother run a successful home accessory and fresh flower boutique in Belo Horizonte, the cradle of Brazil's colonial art.

Today the Roberta Schilling Collection of hand-crafted furniture and accessories has been featured in a variety of home and trade magazines.

Schilling brings together skilled artisans create distinctive pieces with recycled and repurposed materials from South America, including hardwoods found in the ruins of old colonial farm houses dating back as far as the 1800s. Schilling is always on the lookout for new crafts and decorative techniques from villages in her native country of Brazil.

Topsy Turvy Interview - It's good to have friends!

Sometimes I am humbled by my good friends out there in the "online" world. Such is the case with the recent article written over at Topsy Turvy blog.
